Rathfinny Wine Estate

Gun Room Visitors

One of the things I love about working in the Gun Room is chatting with our customers. I often find there’s a connection or that someone has a particularly interesting personal story.

A couple of instances occurred this week. An Englishman and a French woman came in and I explained as usual that we are the shop of the Rathfinny Wine Estate. The gentleman translated and then remarked to me that we probably get quite a few French visitors. In my best French I explained that, yes, we do, quite possibly because Alfriston is twinned with Veules les Roses in Normandy, a beautiful small town near Dieppe.  This brought great smiles from the lady who it turns out is from Dieppe.  As my husband and I share a holiday home with friends in Normandy, I asked if she knew the nearest town to our house. She did. Did she perhaps – and this was really stretching things – know of a hamlet called Renouval? She did… as her brother lives there – just a few doors away from our house!

Later on, a sprightly elderly gentleman came in. His son explained that they were in Alfriston looking for a venue to celebrate the fact that his father is being given the Legion d’Honneur by the French government.  At 95, his father John is one of the last survivors of those who fought on D-Day. John was happy to share some anecdotes and I was honoured to shake the hand of someone who had taken part in such a famous and important historical event.  It is a meeting I will cherish.

If, like me, you enjoy meeting new people in a relaxed setting, why not come along to our Vineyard Beauty Event on Wednesday 7 March at the Flint Barns? We have a few places left on our afternoon session which starts with a light lunch, and includes a walk amongst the vines and a skincare workshop. In honour of Mother’s Day we’re including a complimentary glass of Sussex Sparkling. Tickets cost £25 – for further information please call the Gun Room on 01323 870022 or visit www.rathfinnyestate.com.

Additionally, our new season tours in April and May are now open for booking. Tickets available via our website or by calling the Gun Room on the number above.

We hope to see you on the Estate very soon!
