This summer, we officially launched our Sussex Sparkling wines in South Korea and Japan!
Upon returning to the UK, it’s sinking in that our ambition to share Rathfinny Sussex Sparkling around the world is becoming a reality. It was 14 years ago we penned this audacious statement with stars in our eyes:
‘Our ambition is that in twenty years’ time you will walk into a bar or restaurant in New York or Beijing and you’ll be asked, “Would you like a glass of Champagne or a delicious glass of Sussex? I can recommend Rathfinny.”’
Mark (Rathfinny Co-owner) and Millie (Marketing Director) spent a busy couple of weeks hosting masterclasses, staff trainings and market visits organised by our excellent overseas distributors. Here’s a little diary of the trip…
Seoul
20/06 – Upon arrival, our South Korean distributor, Cave de Vin (CDV), organise a market visit to a few wine merchants and then in the evening we host a trade masterclass at the WSA Wine Academy to wine buyers, sommeliers, press and trade professionals. The wines are well received and the audience are very vinous. They ask technical questions and show particular interest in the importance of flint in our Sussex chalk soils compared to Champagne.
21/06 – In the morning, we host a staff training for the CDV team which is great preparation for a very special evening of officially launching Rathfinny in South Korea at Cavistry restaurant, known for its caviar. 18 impeccably professional wine and food content creators attended and shared some lovely feedback on social media.
22/06 – Another market visit, this time to a wine bar called Vampire Weekend that was set up by an old Plumpton student called Gua-Seob Han. We’re told the wine bar is a hot spot on the Seoul wine scene and popular with top sommeliers. It’s a small world!
Japan
24/06 – Touch down in Tokyo and our Japanese distributor, Vin Passion take us on a market visit to a couple of cool wine shops, including Azabudai Hills where our 2018 Classic Cuvée is stocked. Customers are welcome to try a pairing of gyoza x black vinegar in-store, curated by MW Kenichi Ohashi to show how well our wines pair with homemade food.
25/06 – This was a busy day. We start at The Tokyo Edition, Toranomon, a boutique luxury hotel where are wines are stocked in chef Tom Aikens’ Michelin restaurant, The Jade Room & Garden Terrace. This will be the setting for our launch event that consists of a masterclass followed by an afternoon tea reception on the terrace with sommeliers, wine buyers and a representative from the British Embassy.
Luckily we’re massive foodies on a mission so would never say no to an opportunity to host a wine dinner at the Michelin-starred Tenoshima that same evening! The gracious owners were impressed by how well our wines paired with Japanese cuisine, so came up with a creative idea to craft a menu of dishes that are notoriously hard to pair with wines but went perfectly with Rathfinny. It’s an honour to see our English wine being of service! The Classic Cuvée tastes sublime with sea urchin whilst the Rosé is an excellent foil to sashimi of bonito and salmon roe.
26-28/06 – We travel from Tokyo to Kyoto and head straight into a seminar for trade customers before making our way to Osaka for our official Japanese launch event at the Ritz-Carlton. We have the privilege of presenting our wines to top somms, wine buyers and trade partners followed by an afternoon tea reception.
If we weren’t already having the time of our lives, we certainly were by the time we hosted our final wine dinner at a French restaurant called Louise. The dinner showed both our 75cl Sussex Sparklings and a couple of magnums for comparative tastings.
Overall, the trip was a great success and truly opened our eyes to just how well Rathfinny wines pair with Asian cuisine. If you would like a stockist recommendation in these two countries, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us (sales@rathfinnyestate.com).
