A Sustainable Solution to Protect Our Grapes
At Rathfinny Wine Estate, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. This harvest, we’ve taken an innovative and environmentally friendly step to protect our precious grapes by welcoming a team of trained falcons, hawks and even a Chilean blue eagle to patrol the skies above our Sussex Vineyard.
From dawn to dusk, these majestic birds of prey are working alongside our Vineyard team to keep pigeons, crows, seagulls and other birds from eating the fruit during the critical final month of ripening.
The falconry team provide a natural, effective alternative to netting which we used in previous years, saving over 300km of plastic netting and thousands of plastic clips.

Why falconry?
The falcons and the local birds have a natural predator-prey dynamic. This age-old relationship means that when the pigeons or crows spot the falcons on the Estate at this time of year, they realise they need to look elsewhere for food.
Each bird has been especially bred, trained and handled by expert falconers, ensuring their welfare while allowing them to showcase their natural abilities. In fact, the falconers have said that their birds love the open space at the Estate and sea breezes from our coastal location.

A Sustainable Alternative to Plastic
In the past, Rathfinny used plastic nets to protect grapes from hungry birds. However, these nets only lasted around five seasons and required thousands of small plastic clips to secure them. As a certified B Corp, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact wherever possible and felt that this was a key area for improvement.
