A Sustainable Approach to Making Exceptional Wines
It’s no secret that you plant a vineyard for the next generation, and the world we leave behind matters just as much as the wines we make today.
We want Rathfinny to be a positive force in the world: leading the way in sustainable innovation, acting as responsible custodians of our land in the South Downs, and being a business our Sussex neighbours are proud to have on their doorstep. That’s why, since founding Rathfinny in 2010, sustainability has shaped our business from grape to glass.
In 2023, Rathfinny became the world’s first single-site sparkling wine producer to achieve B Corp certification, recognising our commitment to balancing purpose and profit.
Our work is guided by three sustainability pillars that shape decisions across the business, and each year we release Impact Reports to track our progress.
“We are committed to producing exceptional wines and experiences, enjoyed the world over, that reveal the character of our family Estate in Sussex, using methods that are kind to our land, people, community and wider environment.” — The Rathfinny Mission.
Our Sustainability Pillars: How We’re Driving Positive Change
To bring our mission to life, we have three pillars which guide our sustainability objectives and actions: 1) Nurturing the Land 2) Caring for People 3) Reducing our Footprint.
Nurturing the Land
Protecting and enhancing biodiversity, chalk soils and habitats, while pursuing low-impact and regenerative viticulture.
Caring for People
Building a supportive, inclusive workplace and being a positive force in our local community.
Proud to be a B Corp
Rathfinny is part of a new wave of businesses that balance purpose and profit. This means we are legally required to consider the impact of every decision we make on society and the environment. You can rest assured that we are upholding the highest standards of environmental care and working conditions for our staff. By supporting Rathfinny, you can contribute to sustainable innovation and hold us accountable.
Tracking our Progress
Transparency is central to our sustainability journey. Each year we publish an Impact Report outlining our goals, actions and the challenges we face as we work to improve. We also publish our Carbon report, compiled by Carbon Jacked, which monitors our carbon output.
These reports track progress across our three pillars and help hold us accountable to the commitments we have made.
Our Founders
In 2010, Mark and Sarah bought the Rathfinny Estate whilst Mark was studying for a foundation degree in Wine Production at Plumpton College, Sussex. They both share a life-long passion for sparkling wine.
Mark has been a leading voice and innovator within the English wine industry, in relation to the establishment of the Sussex PDO and the introduction of the innovative 50cl bottle. He is also committed to developing Sussex as a wine tourism destination and along with Sarah, has a hands-on role across the business.
Sarah has been instrumental in the creation and development of the Rathfinny brand and has overseen the growth in the hospitality side of the business. Over the last few years, Sarah prioritised her time to lead Rathfinny through its application for B Corp status which embodies her drive to instil environmental and social concerns into the business. Their daughters also work alongside them, with Faye heading up Wine Tourism and Millie as Brand Director.
In 2026, Mark and Sarah received Honorary Doctorates of Arts from the University of Brighton in recognition of their contributions to education and the promotion of sustainable viticulture.
Beyond establishing Rathfinny Wine Estate, they also founded the Driver Youth Trust, a charity dedicated to supporting young people with literacy challenges. Through their work, they have helped embed equality, inclusion and evidence-based practice into initial teacher training, reaching more than 1,500 educators over the years.
