‘Nurturing the land’ is all about protecting and enhancing biodiversity, chalk soils and habitats, while pursuing low-impact and regenerative viticulture.
Our holistic approach to sustainability recognises that our wines reflect the special place in which they are crafted. We believe the terroir of the Rathfinny Estate is shaped not only by our chalk soils and closeness to the sea, but also by the wider landscape and the flora and fauna that call it home.
From protecting habitats across our single-site Estate to improving soil health beneath the vines, we work to ensure Rathfinny remains a thriving and healthy environment for future generations.
“Rathfinny is not just a sparkling wine; it is a living landscape. Caring for this special place, from the chalk soils beneath our feet to the skylarks nesting on our Winery roof, is fundamental to who we are.” — Mark Driver, Owner & Founder
More than 200 Acres Given to Nature
Through the Countryside Stewardship Scheme, more than a third of the Estate has been dedicated to restoring habitats and enhancing biodiversity. This includes planting wildflower meadows, winter bird food plots and pollinator strips as well as preserving 19 acres of rare chalk grassland, one of the most biodiverse habitats in the UK.
Pursuing Low Impact Viticulture
Healthy vineyards depend on healthy soils. Across the Estate, we are reducing synthetic inputs and introducing more natural vineyard practices.
These include the use of organic seaweed fertilisers sourced from the UK, herbicide-free under-vine management and the introduction of grazing animals to support soil health and nutrient cycling.
Supporting Wildlife at Rathfinny
Since developing the area from arable farmland to a sustainably managed vineyard, biodiversity has thrived across the Estate.
From pollinating insects to rare chalk grassland species, restored habitats and careful land management support a wide variety of life. Skylarks nest on the green roof of our Winery, while wildflower corridors provide food and shelter for bees, butterflies and hoverflies.
Preserving our South Downs Terroir
A fundamental part of our terroir is the South Downs landscape in which our vineyard is situated.
The vineyard is planted on the chalk slopes of the South Downs, just three miles from the English Channel. Our free-draining chalk soils, south-facing aspect and cool maritime climate create ideal conditions for producing elegant and characterful English sparkling wines.
By improving soil health, restoring habitats and managing the Estate responsibly, we are also enhancing the sense of place that defines the style of Rathfinny wines for future generations.
Protecting our Sense of Place
Rathfinny is proud to produce wines in line with the Sussex Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), which recognises high-quality, traditional method sparkling wines. The PDO reflects a shared commitment among Sussex producers to protect the landscape, viticulture and quality of the region’s sparkling wines.
