Flying fur coats

With plants such horseshoe vetch and birds foot trefoil flowering at the moment, various bees are also on the wing. Keep your eyes and ears pealed for these flying fur coats.

This particular specimen found on the vineyard is a carder bee.  They get their names from the way they build their nests – carder is usually associated with a method of producing wool materials.  The bee itself is polylectic.  Evidence of this can be seen by the different colour of the pollen within its pollen sacs on hind legs.

I’m off to find some orchids now….
